What really is the reason kids in america being obese? You can go into just about any educational institute and you immediately encounter scores of above ample size kids.. .a lot bordering on being morbidly obsessed even .Children who are overweight are say about 75 percent chance of growing into obese adults. Ok it is a simple equation ..you eat a certain amount over what you burn daily and all that excess (what is not expelled as waste) stays in your system as fat. This is the underlying mechanics that explains what is happening generally. However… the real issue is what do we do about it.
Now nothing is say wrong with eating after all we need to eat to live but its when its overdone that problems arises. If all that happens is an accumulation of fat and a subsequent increase in girth then apart from the giving rise to some very huge and akward individuals, we would’nt have a problem .However it’s the health issues that is the real negative here…heart diseases ,muscle dystrophy, blood pressure, cholesterol build up, activity retardation and a whole lot more .All of this results in a mark reduction in theproduction and life of the individual and as a consequence… the economy. You see that persons imput will be missing from the overall population im put of the nations workforce.
So we look to the kids to see if there is something that can be put in to place from there to stop this process or at least reduce it. It is interesting to note that the rate of overweight and obese children and adolescents has been practically multiplied by 2 over the last 15 years. Medical complications of overweightedness usually seen only in grown people have now begun to show up in children and teens. Diabetes and cholesterol afflictions have reached almost epidemic quantities among kids in North America. The American Academy of Pediatrics is saying the term obesity not be used, but instead they refer to children with too much weight as overweight.
It has been established that Many overweight kids resort food to when emotionally distressed, depressed, stressed, or bored. For most, this is sub conscious. but, they become hooked on this ‘consolement eating’ behavior and unable to stop. Hence a fight ensues to stifle the urges for highly desirable foods, e.g. ‘junk food,’ even though fully aware of the negative effects of even more weight gain. This is highly indicative of an addiction dependence on real tempting and pleasurable foods. Resourceful evidence now points to overeating as uncannily similar to smoking, drinking, and even drug abuse. The first conference on “Food and Addiction” was held at Yale University in July 2007. And a new study reports: “Sugar and fat-rich foods are being eaten because they are addictive.” The main difference between tobacco, alcohol, drugs, and high pleasure foods thus seems to be simply that highly pleasurable foods are easy to aquire by kids
Obesity frequently becomes a lifelong issue. The reason most obese adolescents regain their lost pounds is that after they have reached their goal, they resort to their old bad habits of eating and not exercising. An overweight adolescent must consequentially learn to eat and enjoy healthy foods in moderate amounts and to exercise regularly to attain and retain and the desired weight. Parents can also contribute to keeping their kids from becoming even more obese and even encourage them to get smaller…by,instead of harping on and on about how fat and unhealthy their kid is instigate positive discourse which has proven to be a lot more helpful in re-bolstering their confidence, self worth, resulting in them eventually losing weight.
Another factor that impinges upon the nutritional quality of a child’s diet is the fact that many American families don’t eat meals together very often. Research shows that when children eat meals with their parents they eat a more nutritious diet. The nutritional quality of a child’s diet is positively influenced not only by having a pleasant family atmosphere at mealtime, but also by having a good parental role model as far as food preferences are concerned.
Children who eat by themselves tend to eat foods high in fat, sugar and salt. But poor nutrition is not the only downside of allowing children to fend for themselves. Regular family meals also provide order, discipline and emotional security for a child. Psychologists have found that positive child-parent interactions improve a child’s development and their cognitive ability.
The Department of Health and Human Services, encourages healthy habits more than ever through their work to eliminate health disparities; their many initiatives designed to encourage physical activity, healthy eating, and regular checkups; and their nationwide campaigns to discourage smoking and drug and alcohol abuse.
To help promote healthy lifestyles, they are visiting schools across America in their 50 Schools in 50 States Initiative to talk with kids about avoiding drugs and alcohol, avoiding tobacco in every form, being physically active, eating right, and making healthy choices every day.
Each time out on the road, whether at a school or passing through an airport, you can meet young people who are making choices that affect their health and well-being. It is believed that what they see and hear in the media can have a profound effect on their choices.
