Rottweilers originated in Germany and are large loyal dogs that have been historically used for herding and other work tasks. Over the years, Rottweilers have gone on to be used in other areas including as guide dogs, police dogs, and search and rescue dogs. They are very popular with a number of people. Mistaken Identity
Most owners of these dogs don’t know it, but though they are known for a number of things including their strength, as well as being involved in security and law enforcement, Rottweilers were originated as a herding dog.
They Served
Rottweilers are known as very good guard and security dogs, but they contribute even more during times of international upheaval. During both World War I and World War II, Rottweilers were used in various military roles including as messenger dogs and guard dogs.
Named After a Town
The Roman Empire was vast and extended far in all directions, that includes into what is now the country of Germany. In AD 73, the Romans founded a city in what is now southwestern Germany, named Rottweil. It is from this town where the dog breed gets its name.
Public Recognition
Rottweilers were first officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1935.
