What is Autism?
Autism is a complex neurological disorder that typically occurs within the first three years of life that results in usually severe developmental disability. The ensuing effects of Autism result in severe impairment in areas of social interaction and communication and may even result in self-injurious behavior in individual cases.
What are the available treatments for Autism?
Currently, there is no effective treatment or full-proof cure for this disease. On a case-to-case basis, the symptoms are curbed with diet, psychotropic medications and other regimens. The results may not be very desiring. In some recent times, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) appears to be beneficial as an alternative treatment of Autism.
What really does HBOT do?
According to the researchers, an increase in atmospheric pressure allows for more gas to be dissolved into any given liquid. At room temperature, oxygen exists as a gas, whereas the human body comprises mainly of water. The HBOT is a safe and effective way to get more oxygen into the body at the cellular level by using pressurized air chambers.
HBOT de-stresses all cells in the human body by providing oxygen, which is a necessary component of every chemical and healing process. This allows the body to recover much faster. Although the brain makes up less than 2% of the body’s physical mass, about 20-30% of the body’s consumption of oxygen occurs within the brain and spinal cord. These areas are extremely sensitive and responsive to oxygen increases and support. HBOT is generally considered the simplest, safest and most effective way known in the field of medicine to provide substantial extra oxygen support when needed.
Various studies conducted on patients with Autism undergoing HBOT have revealed that there is a marker improved function of existing mitochondria cells. Further, it results in increased blood flow to the brain in areas where blood flow is depressed. It helps in repairing the blood-brain barrier, it stabilizes the cell membranes. It was also noted that there is a significant reduction of oxidative stress and it has an anti-inflammation effect. It further led to improved neurotransmitter abnormalities and reduction of swelling of inflamed tissues. Last, but not the least, it resulted in the creation of new blood vessels.
HPOT is prescribed by a physician and performed under medical supervision as the process requires inhalation of 100% oxygen in a total body chamber, where atmospheric pressure is increased and controlled. It is an extremely safe treatment and all possible risks will be discussed with you before the therapy. HBOT cannot be done at home or by patient on his own.
